Abstract

Dementia is an acquired brain disease characterized by a decline in cognitive function. Deterioration of memory often takes the form of dementia, but deterioration of cognitive functions is not limited to memory (ie, deterioration of executive functions, attention, language, social perception and reasoning, psychomotor speed, visuo-perceptual and visuo-spatial abilities are recorded). Cognitive decline is not associated with normal aging and significantly interferes with a person's freedom in activities of daily living. Current symptoms are not explained by thought disorders, delirium-induced mental status changes, intoxication, withdrawal syndrome, other mental disorders (for example, schizophrenia or other primary mental disorders, depressive disorder). Based on the available evidence, cognitive impairment is thought to be related to the brain, trauma, malnutrition, chronic use of certain substances or drugs, or a neurological or medical condition caused by exposure to heavy metals or other toxins.
